The AYS Concerto Competition was established to recognize outstanding musicians in the orchestra and to also train the orchestra in the art of orchestral accompaniment.
Eligibility:
The concerto competition is open to all current members of the orchestra and winner performs with AYS in the 2020/21 season. The winner does not have to be a current member at the time of performance.
Application:
The application deadline is TBD in fall 2020. To complete your applications, a recommendation letter from current teacher or a musician of acknowledged standing, must be emailed to apply@aysymphonyorg.dream.press. Be prepared to attach your CV or musical resume to the application. Must include applicant’s musical education background, performance experience, and a list of any awards and accomplishments. Please include list of major solo works in your repertoire, together with the dates of most recently performed.
Date, Location, and Times:
The audition is TBD in fall 2020. After you submit an application, you will be assigned a time for your audition. It is important to arrive earlier than your assigned time in order to keep everything running smoothly and on time. A warm up room will be provided upon arrival.
Repertoire:
Each entrant will perform, from memory, at least one movement of a standard concerto or concert piece, with cadenza. When choosing repertoire, please keep in mind that the conductor has the right to cut or choose the piece to fit programming for the winning performance. This discussion will take place between conductor and winner in fall 2020. If your piece is more contemporary, please seek prior approval for performing your audition with music.
Entrants will be given up to 15 minutes to perform.
Accompanists:
Each entrant must arrange for their own accompanists. AYS will not provide one for you.
Entrant must provide three copies of the solo part to the judges upon arrival to your audition.
The decision of the judges will be final. AYS reserves the right not to name a winner in the event that judges determine there are no suitable or qualified applicants.
Honorarium:
In addition to the solo performance in 2020/21 season, the winner will also receive a $1,000 honorarium upon receipt of invoice following performance.
